Project Ideas

Identify Target Audience

Age - 16+ PEGI

I intend to give my game a PEGI rating of 16+ due to the content that will be within my video game such as pixelated blood, violence and mature content. This is so that people that play my game will fully understand the story that is portrayed through the gameplay and if younger people were to play my game, it could lead to violent actions or aggression in real life which is obviously not a great thing because they are not very mature in the meantime.

Gender - ALL GENDERS

I am aiming my game at all genders since I believe that anybody could play my game a leave with a great experience since my game won't lean towards a violent or romantic genre through the whole play-through. I want my game to appeal to as many people as possible by implementing different types of genres within some aspects of game-play but I want there to be a solid story-line for my audience to thoroughly enjoy.

Interests - RPG games, Anime & Manga

I was inspired to create my game from my personal interests such as various RPG games, Anime and Manga. I feel like my game is closely related to my interests due to what happens within the game and the whole type of style both story and art-wise. I believe that people will enjoy these type of interests because that's what my base game is inspired and created by.

Genres - Horror RPG

I have chose this genre because I think that this genre works really well with the story I have planned. Within the game, you will control a character that you are able to customise at the beginning and through the game and there are many different set characters in the game that you meet throughout and solve the mysteries that lie ahead. Within my game, there will be many different horror aspects with jump scares, violence and pixelated gore for extra effect and tone to the actual in game experience which I intend to get the player hyped up and intense when they are in the moment.

Resource Audit

Hardware

PC - Specs (CPU, GPU, Motherboard, RAM, PSU, HDD)

You will need some form of a PC in order to play my game since that is the main platform I plan to release my game on. To form a PC, you can either buy a fully built PC or build you own custom PC. My game will not take very high specs to run since the style is very retro and 2D pixel style so the PC you run my game on doesn't need to have very high specifications.

Keyboard

The Keyboard will be used for all of the controls within my game. I intend to use keyboard only but in the future once my game is fully released I can add custom controls for player that would like to use a mouse for specific controls as well. The player would use WASD for the main movement in different directions and then other keys on the other side of the keyboard for extra commands such as menu, save, inventory etc.

Mouse

You would need a mouse to actually navigate the game to download, install and actually run it. Within actual game-play of the game being open, the mouse will not be used and there will be additional options where the player can actual use the mouse to direct the character where to go and use different buttons on the mouse in replacement for keyboard keys.

Monitor - cables (HDMI, VGA, DVI, Displayport)

I would need a monitor for my video game so that we can actually view what is going on. There are many different monitors and cables you could use for different preferences and outcomes whilst using them within the game-play. There are different aspect ratios which determine how the monitor will look either in a widescreen or square style. Also, the different types of cables offer different types of properties such as more hz per second, built in sound, colour contrast and much more. Some cables may benefit some more than others but they all can get the job done in order to be able to play my game.

Headphones

For my game, headphones are recommended to hear sound effects within the game for general ambiance, jump scares, game music and much more. The sound is one of the most important things for tension and atmosphere in a game. I would use many sounds within my game for a lot of different aspects such as generally moving, opening a bag, walking over different types of terrains such as leaves, stones etc.

Software

Construct 2

I'll be using Construct 2 to actually create my game by using programming and implementing my assets into the project. This program gives me all of the tools I need in order to create my prototype game for my final major project and I have full access to the contract 2 license in college which means that I can actually produce this with no legal problems.

Paint.net

I'm using Paint.net to create the art assets for my game since this piece of software offers lots of different options and tools for me to use for different effects and details of my artwork and this software is also free to use and really easy to download which is really useful and efficient for me since I already use the program in my free time.

Reaper

I would use this software to create various sound effects that I would like to implement into my game more more effect and atmosphere. This program is also free to use and it has a wide range of different sound tools I can use to create custom effects that I could change and implement into my game.

Time - 2 Weeks

I have a 2 week deadline for my final major prototype displaying a small amount of game-play of how I plan it to work. The deadline is quite short due to the fact that there is such a limited amount of time to complete all of the sufficient units needed for a final grade, and the product that I need to display is going to be quite basic showing how the mechanics could work within the game and how the story/ game-play will work.

Skills Audit

To create my final major,  The mains skills that I need to carry the task is knowledge of each of the software that I am going to be using. Fortunately, I am quite confident and comfortable with the type of software that I am using since I have previously used them in my previous units and spare time. Within the creation of the final major, I may be unsure on how to complete multiple tasks and in this case, I would use the help of a video on YouTube to see how to create or program different things that I would like present.

Mind Map of Project Ideas

Here, you can see that I have brainstormed 3 different ideas that I have come up with for a game that I would like to create for my final major. I have included things that I will need in order to create the game and common aspects of what the game would have to such as protagonists, items, software etc.

Idea 1 - 2D Platformer (Construct 2)

Idea 2 - 3D FPS (Unity)

Idea 3 - 2D RPG (Construct 2)

Requirements of Each Idea

Resources and Skills needed for each idea

Idea 1 - For this idea, I would use Construct 2 as the main source of the game as it's very simple to create a game of this genre. I have access to the software in college and I have previously created a platformer in a previous unit, which means that I know how to create a platforming type of game. I would also use a program such as Photoshop or paint.net to create assets and artwork to implement into my game for effect and visual appeal.

Idea 2 - I would use unity to program and create the actual FPS game, but for things such as assets models I would use blender since the software is much more fluent and reliable for this type of job. The skills I would need is to be able to know how to use tools and hotkeys within the 3D software so I can effectively and efficiently complete the project using the skills I have learnt from previous projects during class and YouTube videos.

Idea 3 - For this idea, I would like to use Construct 2 for the base game using the simple programming features that the program offers you. I would use paint.net for the textures and art assets because the program is completely free with all of the available tools offered to the user which is really useful because I can use this program at home and where ever else I need it.

Decide on an Idea and Why?

I have chose Idea 3 which is the 2D styled RPG game. I have chose this because I am a huge fan of video games in this genre and I would like a bit of a challenge to create a new type of game that I haven't tried before. I really like how the original Pokemon games are presented to the user in a pixel format and I think that this would be the best outcome for my idea because both the story and genre fit. I also want to do something new and enjoyable so that I don't get bored of the project quickly because I enjoy creating original content because it feels fresh compared to making something very similar to what I have created before.

Research Target Audience Further

Spending Habits - My target audience would probably be interested in a wide range of different video games because my game would be something that would be found and played by people who play games on a regular basis. I also think that my game audience would spend money on merchandise as collectibles and little things that they enjoy to buy as a treat every now and then as a reward.
